Gavin Bachan, an Assistant Registration Officer of the Guyana Elections Com-mission (GECOM), lost his life yesterday morning after the car he was driving slammed into a section of the guard rail along the Kitty seawall in the vicinity of the Celina Resort.
Bachan, 26, of 181 Hope West Enmore, died on the spot.
The mother of the dead man, who spoke with this newspaper on the condition of anonymity, said her son had just finished repairing his car and had visited his girlfriend for her to go with him to the bank to withdraw some money since he only had $4000 on him. However, she told him they would go later. The woman said her son was heading back home when he met his demise.
At the time of his death, Bachan had been an employee of GECOM for about five years and was on his annual leave which started on Monday to celebrate his birthday. According to his mother he usually took his leave every year around his birthday and was currently on three weeks leave.
According to Bachan’s brother, Kevin Bachan, upon receiving a call about the accident, he went to the scene but by the time he got there everything had already been cleared and only police were there. He also learnt that someone had already pronounced his brother dead.
He also noted that he was told that the body had been taken to the parlour and police were dealing with the matter. He said the police called him yesterday for two relatives to be present today for the post-mortem.
The police in a statement yesterday said that they were investigating a fatal accident that occurred at about 0330h yesterday at Clive Lloyd Drive, ECD, and which resulted in the death of Bachan.
The statement said that investigations had revealed that Bachan was allegedly driving the motor car at a fast rate when he lost control of the vehicle and collided with a metal guard rail along the roadway. The police said he was pronounced dead on arrival at the GPHC.
Bachan’s body is currently at the Lyken Funeral Home. Police investigations are ongoing.
