A mason was yesterday remanded to prison on charges that he stole a bicycle and was later held with cannabis.
The allegation against Alim Kartel, of 120 Tabatinga, Lethem, is that on October 29, at St. Ignatius, Rupununi he stole a bicycle valued $45,000 belonging to Richard Gomes.
Additionally, Kartel was accused of having four grammes of cannabis in his possession.
The young man denied both charges when they were read to him by Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The prosecution objected to Kartel being admitted to bail, saying that there is a likelihood he would not return to stand trial. As a result, he was remanded to prison and the case was transferred to the Lethem Magistrate’s Court for December 1.
