Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) rebounded from their upset loss against the University of Guyana (UG) on Saturday to defeat powerhouse Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by four runs on Sunday as action continued in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/New Building Society second-division 40 overs competition at the MSC ground.
In the rain-affected encounter, GYO were bowled out for 122 off their allotment of 25 overs while MSC were restricted to 118-8 in 25 overs after racing to 75-2.
For GYO, A. Raheem top scored with 29 while Richard Hoyte and Trevon France made 21 and 19 runs respectively. Off spinner Shaquille Moseley took his wicket tally past 10 as he accounted for four of GYO’s batsmen, finishing with 4-18 from five overs. He was supported by former national youth player Vishal Narayan, who claimed 3-10 also from five overs.
In pursuit of the target, MSC lost Ncosie Barker without scoring in the first over after he was caught behind off a lifting delivery from former West Indies youth player Kwame Crosse. However, experienced player Troy Lewis took the assault to the bowlers as MSC raced to 50 within the first 10 overs.
However with 52 runs on the scorecard MSC lost their second wicket when Narayan drove a full toss to cover to be caught for nought. That did not stop Lewis who was dealing in sixes as he went beyond the boundary six times to bring up his second 50 in successive innings. He was so aggressive during his innings that at one stage he had 50 out of MSC’s 60 runs.
He was removed in the 12th over for 54 with the score on 76. It was a disaster afterwards as the hosts’ middle and lower order struggled to find the gaps and the boundaries while GYO’s bowlers made constant inroads with some accurate bowling.
Shaquille Moseley and Delvon McEwan were the only other batsmen to make it to double figures scoring 16 and 12 respectively. Crosse was the most economical and efficient of the visitors’ bowlers with 2-6 from five overs. He also up to the task of defending nine runs in the last over which he did effectively conceding just five.
Crosse was backed up by Wazir Mohamed and L. Deroche who claimed two wickets each. It was MSC’s second defeat and GYO’s second win.
Action is set to continue this weekend at venues across the city and at UG.
