The driver involved in the La Union, West Coast Demerara accident was on Friday granted his pre-trial freedom in the sum of $500,000 when he faced a charge of causing death by dangerous driving.
Devon Cameron appeared before Magistrate Clive Nurse at the Vreed-en-Hoop court where he was also slapped with a charge of driving under the influence of alcohol for which he was granted self-bail. He is scheduled to return to court on December 29.
The court heard that on Wednesday November 5, the defendant allegedly struck and killed 12-year-old Isaiah Khan of La Union, West Coast Demerara.
Cameron of New Road, Vreed-en-Hoop was ordered to lodge his passport and also had his driver’s licence suspended following arguments by police prosecutor, Corporal Jairam Luckhai. The prosecutor had asked for the defendant be remanded to prison due to the seriousness and prevalence of the offence and for a date be set for report and fixture. He submitted that if granted bail, the defendant would flee the jurisdiction or would interfere with witnesses as he lives in their
vicinity.
Attorney-at-law Lyndon Amsterdam in his submissions for bail to be granted told the magistrate that if found culpable then his client can be punished.
He argued that his client is presumed innocent and is entitled to his freedom. He said it was not a case where his client was a repeat offender or a flight risk and that the onus was on the court to prove him otherwise.
Meanwhile, Khan, a Grade Seven student of Windsor Forest Secondary landed on the bonnet of the car PMM 4884 and crashed into the windscreen before being flung into a clump of grass.
He had just exited the taxi with his two older sisters when the car that was coming from the opposite direction hit him. The car also knocked down and killed a dog.
