Some ten injured after car smashes into minibus at Mon Repos

A mid-morning vehicular accident between a route 44 minibus and a motor car on Railway Embankment at Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara yesterday, has left some 10 persons injured.

According to eyewitnesses around 10:30 hrs, the minibus BKK 2243 was heading east while the car PKK 6721 was heading in the opposite direction, the car then proceeded to take a right onto School Street, Mon Repos and collided with the minibus causing the bus to fall on its side. The car subsequently ran into a Guyana Power and Light post.

Driver of the minibus, Alvin Pelleu told Stabroek News yesterday that he was heading to Ann’s Grove when the car which was going real fast swerved into him. He said all he remembered was the bus being struck and passengers screaming. Pelleu sustained multiple lacerations to his arm and was limping.

There were mixed responses from witnesses as to the whereabouts of the driver of the car, some said that he fled the scene. But one person, who requested anonymity, told this publication that he was riding his bicycle behind the bus when the collision occurred. He said the male driver of the car was with a woman who was bleeding profusely.

“I see de man [driver of the car] holding the woman in his hands like a baby and she looked unconscious. He put she in a taxi and carry her to the hospital,” the man said.

All efforts to locate the driver of PKK 6721 and the injured woman proved futile.

Another eyewitness Besham Ramdas, said that he was heading to church when he heard a loud bang and upon investigating he saw the bus on its side, he then quickly took a piece of wood and started to break the windows of the minibus and assisted passengers to get out.

Desiree Williams who was a passenger of the minibus and was heading to Ann’s Grove when the incident occurred, sustained lacerations about her hands and feet and complained about neck pains. She was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital.

Other passengers of the bus were still on the scene when this newspaper got there. Tothyln Jordan and Thomas and Angela Douglas had visible lacerations about their bodies and were traumatized.

Jordan related that she was on her side in the bus and she held onto a little boy who was beside her and prayed. She related that she felt suffocated and scared at the same time.

“This thing look like this car driver wanted to commit suicide, how he didn’t see this big bus coming? He [car driver] just turned and jam we,” Jordan related.
