Pomeroon farmer beat wife with cutlass – court told

A farmer of Grant Opposition, Pomeroon River was on Monday granted bail when he appeared before Magistrate Sunil Scarce at the Charity Magistrate’s Court charged over beating his wife with a cutlass.

It is the prosecution’s case that on November 4 at his home, Sooknand Rampersaud assaulted his wife Jennifer Bhagwandeen. Rampersaud pleaded not guilty to the charge of assault causing actual bodily harm.

According to the facts, at around 1 pm, Rampersaud went home and saw his wife talking on the phone.

He allegedly told her to tell her sister who she was talking to at the time that “you don’t sleep with me.”

Bhagwandeen reportedly told him to tell her himself and handed him the phone which he took and threw on the floor. He then reportedly took a pressure pot cover and attempted to hit her but she was able to block the blow with a rolling pin.

It is alleged that Rampersaud then took a cutlass and dealt his wife several lashes about her body causing her to suffer injuries. A report was made to the police and Rampersaud was later arrested and charged.

The man was not represented in court and there being no objections to bail by Prosecutor Haimwant Ramsewak, it was set at $30,000.

The man was ordered to return to the Charity Magistrate’s Court on November 24 when the matter is expected to be called again.
