Dear Editor,
It was Karl Marx who posited, “History repeats itself, first as tragedy, second as farce.” When a PPP that included Jagan and Burnham in its leadership was empowered by the people’s vote to lead in decision-making for the colony of British Guiana, the colonial power suspended parliament in 1953. From all accounts, Britain acted out of vested imperial interest, Cold War insecurity and fear as regards the nationalist course the patriotic leaders would chart.
On Monday, November 10, the current PPP leadership acting out of vested interest, partisan insecurity and scrutiny-intolerant fear, did not even turn up for a parliamentary sitting for which the President himself had belatedly announced the date. Instead, utilizing the extreme power enshrined in the previously vilified 1980 Constitution, a minority government which had labelled 1992 “the return of democracy” sought to nullify and negate the rights of the majority of Guyanese and their elected representatives, by shutting down the National Assembly.
Instead of repeating history whether as tragedy or as farce, it is time for us as a nation under God to get back to the future.
Yours faithfully,
