On Day Two of the Guyana Amateur Squash Association National short course swimming championships yesterday afternoon Aleka Persaud broke the 50m freestyle in a time of 36.94s in the girls eight years and under category.
She also broke the 50m butterfly event record with a time of 43.51s and she smashed Telena Smith’s record of 1.41.38s in a time of 1.38.11s in the 100 IM. Raekwon Noel swimming took the boys eight years and under 50m freestyle race with a time of 33.31s.He also took the 50m butterfly event in a time of 39.11s and he demolished the long standing record of Ronaldo Rodrigues 100m IM of 1.31.46s with a perfect swim time of 1.30s.
In the boys 9-10 year-old category Leon Seaton broke his own record of 32.47s in the 50m freestyle with a new time of 31.78s.In the girls 11-12 category Amy Grant broke her idol Britany Van Lange’s butterfly record time of 34.86s clocking a time of 34.25s with her unique side breathing style which no other swimmer uses in this country .
Other winners in the day’s events were Omar Adams who won the 50m and 200m freestyle events, swimming in the boys 15-17 years category; Jadyn George collected three titles in the girls 9-10 years category with wins in the 50m and 200m freestyle and the 100m breaststroke.Lian Winter also captured three titles in the same category with wins in the 50m butterfly, 100m backstroke and the 200IM. Her brother Alex Winter also won the 50m butterfly in the boys 11-12 years category. Accalia Khan in the girls 13-14 years age group won the 50m and 200m freestyle events while the boys 18 years and over 50m freestyle event was won by Earlando McRae who represented Guyana in the 2013 FINA World Championship.
Action continues today, the final day, with the 1500m and 800m events.
