The University of Guyana (UG) cricket team delivered a second upset in the Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA)/New Building Society 40 overs second division competition as they defeated host Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) by nine wickets Saturday.
MSC batted first and were limited to 82-9 as opener Troy Lewis was unable to continue his innings after being hit in the face by a delivery that lifted suddenly on the batsman. In reply UG galloped to 84-1 in 10 overs.
Medium pacers Lloyd George and Michael Shalim were the chief wicket takers for UG with three wickets each while another medium pacer Ryan McCal claimed two wickets. Kefa Naughton and Ncosie Barker were the only batsmen from MSC that made it to double figures after scoring 25 and 14 respectively.
MSC’s misery this year continued when the visitors made batting seem easy on a pitch that the host uses for daily practice. N. Carryl played an unbeaten innings of 42 while his partner at the end was Melroy Stevenson, who was on 16 when victory was achieved. Former national youth player Leon Williams was the only wicket to fall for the visitors.
He was removed by left arm pacer Mark Cumberbatch who continues to be MSC’s leading pacer in this tournament.
It was the tertiary institution second major win after they defeated the Gandhi Youth Organisation (GYO) two weekends ago.
