Mon Repos residents who participated in a composting exercise in collaboration with the Clean Green Guyana Campaign were recently able to collect this nutrient-rich soil for their gardens.
Six weeks ago residents from Block CC deposited their kitchen and yard waste in a community compost heap that was established following a process supervised by composting expert Rufus Lewis, under the Clean Green Guyana/IDB-funded campaign.
Lewis visited the location several times over the said period to teach residents how to compost kitchen waste to produce compost that could be used as a soil enhancer, according to a press release from Guyenter-prise.
“Composting has been described as nature’s way of recycling as the process converts organic waste into a valuable product (compost) instead of that waste being disposed of by undesirable means like dumping or burning,” the press release said. Further, by separating and diverting organic waste from the Haags Bosch Sanitary Landfill, composting helps to extend the life of the landfill. Resident Hiralall Bissessar said residents were pleased to learn how to compost and hoped to continue to do so in their backyards.
He said that the project progressed smoothly and there were no foul odours or the presence of pests due to Lewis’s constant supervision of the process.
