Once again the North Georgetown District/ District 11 has dominated the other districts to top the swimming segment of the 54th National Schools Championship yesterday at the National Aquatic Centre.
Similarly to their previous dominance in this event, North Georgetown ruled in the pool as they finished with more than 100 points ahead of the second place finishers.
At the end of the day the results were as follows; North Georgetown 429 points (pts), North West DT 253 pts, Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani 226 pts, Cuyuni/Mazaruni 174 pts, Rupununi and Essequibo Coast/ Pomeroon joint in fifth on 145 pts, East Georgetown 126 pts, South Georgetown 122.5 pts, West Demerara 50 pts, West Coast Berbice 47 pts, East Bank Demerara 43 pts, New Amsterdam/ Canje 17 pts, East Coast Demerara 12 pts and Potaro/ Siparuni and East Canje/Conrentyne on 10 points each for the 14th position.
North Georgetown controlled most of the individual categories and both of the relays. Their first win in the individual competition came in the day’s fourth event when Phillip DeNobrega won the boys’ under 18 100 SC metre backstroke in a timings of 1:11.60. After that win the defending champions went on to win three out of the next five events.
Those wins included Daryl Chambers’ victory in event number five the girls open 100 SC metre backstroke, Raekwon Noel in event number eight the boys’ under 10 50 SC metre freestyle and Leon Seaton event number 10 the boys’ under 12 50 SC metre freestyle.
By the end of the 10th event North Georgetown held the lead which they maintain to the end. Meanwhile in the relay North Georgetown again finished at the summit of the girls’ and boys’ open 200 SC metre freestyle. In the girls’ category North Georgetown won the event and were followed by North West and Upper Demerara Kwakwani, who finished second and third respectively while in the boys’ event North Georgetown peaked once again, with Upper Demerara/ Kwakwani second and Cuyuni Mazaruni third. In one of the most exciting race of the day 13 year-old Kenita Mahaica of the East Bank Demerara district, for the first time defeated her national counterpart Amy Grant in event 11, the girls’ under-14 50 short course (SC) Meter freestyle.
Outstanding performances were completed by Nathon Hackett, Grant, Tiffany DeMoura, Accalia Khan, Andrew Fowler and Joseph DeNobrega, who at all times finished in the top three of their events.
Tomorrow the track and field segment will commence at the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) as the one week activities of the championships continues.
