Port Mourant TC roll over Jaguars

Port Mourant Training Center (PMTC) were crowned champions of the 2nd Annual Rollers Old Boys Lien Trophy Volleyball Competition after defeating the Port Mourant Jaguars 3-1 last Sunday at the Port Mourant Community Centre Harcourt.

Organised by the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA), the competition attracted three teams; PMTC, Port Mourant Jaguars and the Berbice Under-19 team. The preliminary stage was played on a two best of three round -robin basis with the top two clashing in a three best of five final.

PMTC, who were without their star players, won the final 3-1 with sets; 25-23, 23-25, 25-21 & 25-13.

Earlier in the preliminary matches Port Mourant Jags defeated PMTC 2-1 after completing a sweep with sets (25-21, 19-25, 15-10). PMTC then defeated Berbice U19, 2-0 (25-18, 26-24) while the Jags also defeated the U19 team 2-0 (25-21, 25-22).

At the presentation ceremony, Clifton Phillips, former national setter and founder/captain of Rollers Volleyball Club, in his remarks expressed disappointment that the present Rollers team did not participate and also lamented the poor turnout of clubs that had earlier indicated their intention to participate.

He said he was impressed with the standard of play and will encourage the Rollers Old Boys to sponsor again next year. BVA President Gregory Rambarran in his remarks also expressed his disappointment with the poor turnout of teams and took the opportunity to thank the Rollers Old Boys for the sponsorship.

He also thanked the management of the Port Mourant Community Centre, the officials and the players for ensuring a successful competition.

Trophies and medals were presented by Phillips and Parbatan Mangar (Rommel) of Rollers to the winners-PMTC, second place finisher- Port Mourant Jaguars and third place finisher- Berbice U19.

Jason Seelochan received the best setter trophy and Trevon McRae the best Spiker trophy. The BVA also presented a medal to McRae for being the Most Valuable Player(MVP) and a Mikasa MVA 330 ball to 4 members of the Red Under 16 team from # 52 village on the Corentyne who won an exhibition match earlier that.
