Ketley Primary is the winner of the Most Improved School Yard competition for healthy schools in Guyana hosted by the Environmental Community Health Organisation (ECHO).
According to press release from ECHO, the second and third place winners were St Stephens Primary and J E Burnham Primary.
The competition was held among 15 primary schools in the Georgetown area under three categories: water and sanitation, garbage collection and disposal, condition of school yard including its frontage.
The objectives according to ECHO were three-fold: to raise awareness of the importance of the environment; to provide an opportunity for teachers, parents and children to work together on a project aimed at improving conditions within a school; and to improve the aesthetics of 15 school yards in Georgetown.
Winners will receive education enhancing prizes at a special presentation ceremony and all participants will receive certificates. ECHO said it is appreciative of the ECHO clubs for their participation and all those who are a part of the collective effort to preserve and protect the environment.
The primary schools that participated were: St Margaret’s, St Stephens, East La Penitence, South, Tucville, F E Pollard, J E Burnham, Enterprise, Stella Maris, North Georgetown, St Angela’s, Ketley, St Sidwell’s and Smith’s Memorial.
