Team Guyana kept its hopes alive of qualifying for the second round of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games hockey tourney, defeating Bermuda 1-0 yesterday in their second Pool-B fixture at the High Performance Centre in Veracruz, Mexico.
Following a nil-all opening half, Leigh Sandison would prove to be the difference between the two nations as she netted through a 55th minute field goal strike.
With the win, the local ladies move to three points from two games while Bermuda conclude their group campaign in the cellar position with zero points from three matches.
Guyana will now faceoff with defending champs Trinidad and Tobago today in their final group fixture knowing that only a victory would secure them a berth into the next round. The twin island republic in their second matchup drew with the Dominican Republic 2-2 on penalty strikes after normal time finished 2-2.
Due to the stalemate, Trinidad and Tobago currently sit in the second position with four points from two games and only require a draw to clinch a berth to the next round. On the other hand, the Dominican Republic secured their spot in the next round with an unassailable seven points from their three fixtures.
The top two teams in the tournament will qualify for the 2015 Pan American Games in Toronto
