Attorneys Nicola Pierre and Priscilla Chandra-Haniff were on Wednesday sworn in as Commissioners of Title.
Pierre and Chandra-Haniff each took the oath of office before Prime Minister Samuel Hinds at a ceremony that was held at the Office of the Prime Minister, the Government Information Agency (GINA) reports. They will be responsible for settling land disputes and the granting of prescriptive titles and Prime Minister Hinds urged them to be ready for all challenges that lie ahead, while noting that operating in such a capacity as this is “almost unnatural.”
Both attorneys are graduates of the University of Guyana (UG) and the Hugh Wooding Law School.
According to GINA, Pierre has 16 years of experience as a practicing attorney, inclusive of that of a legislative drafter and a UG lecturer, while Chandra-Haniff has eight years of experience, including as a UG lecturer.
Pierre reaffirmed that she would do her best to function in her new position as Commissioner of Title. “I will do my best, endeavouring to uphold the office and perform my duties efficiently, confidently, and as the oath said, without fear or favour,” she was quoted as saying.
Chandra-Haniff, meanwhile, also committed to serving to the best of her ability. “I would like to reiterate my commitment to ensuring that the judiciary remains transparent, fair and highly efficient,” she said.
Also present at the ceremony was the acting Chancellor of the Judiciary Justice Carl Singh.
