Dear Editor,
It has just been brought to our attention that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has threatened to take the Mayor and Council of Georgetown, to court for its inappropriate and harmful dumping and handling of garbage around our municipal markets.
The EPA proposed action is totally justified and they must proceed to carry out their mandate; the situation is disgusting and a danger to the health and well-being of all citizens including those who pass through the city.
However in the interest of fairness we offer this caveat for consideration by the EPA. The persons to take to court should be the Town Clerk (ag) Ms Carol Sooba and Minister of Local Government Mr Whittaker, since the latter has allowed the former to ignore every, we repeat every, recommendation of the Mayor and Councillors to improve the solid waste situation – refusal to go to tender, delay in having a newly acquired skip made operational, the removing of street orderlies, giving direct orders to the Director of Solid Waste when she has neither the experience nor the competence. The lady is allowed or encouraged by the Minister to act in a most cavalier, unlawful and dangerous manner.
The EPA should deal with the real miscreants, and not those clothed with the legal responsibility; remember we are in the dark clouds of executive lawlessness. The EPA should do its job without fear, favour or ill will.
Yours faithfully,
Hamilton Green
