Team Guyana recorded their second victory of the 2014 Central American and Caribbean Games hockey tourney, defeating Jamaica 4-2 on penalty strikes after normal time finished 0-0 in the 5-8 positional plate event yesterday.
With a winner unable to be found during the 70 minutes of regulation time, Guyana would take a 1-0 lead in the shoot-out as Gabriel Xavier scored in their first attempt while custodian Alysa Xavier denied Jamaica’s Demi Nicholson.
The score would remain 1-0 in the favor of Guyana as both sides failed to score in the second round from the distance. It would then become 2-1 in the third round of penalty strikes as both teams scored from the mark in the form of Guyana’s Leigh Sandison and Jamaica’s Chakira Airey.
Guyana’s vice captain Ulrica Sutherland would keep their one goal lead intact as she scored in the fourth round while Kamille Griffiths of Jamaica followed suit as she scored.
Simply needing to score in the fifth round to clinch the matchup, Chantelle Fernandes would seal the win for the local ladies as she finished her attempt past custodian Lorie-Ann McIntosh.
With the win, Guyana will now battle Barbados for the fifth position tomorrow at the same venue.
