A 21-year-old unlicensed driver of De Willem, West Coast Demerara lost his life when the vehicle he was driving crashed into a parked car and a garage at Zeeburg around 11 pm on Friday.
Kevin Sackichan, 21, an auto electrician, sustained head injuries and never regained consciousness. He succumbed around 4:10 am yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospi-tal (GPH).
His cousin, Udesh Kissoon, 24, a labourer of the same village sustained broken ribs and nose, dislodged shoulder and other injuries. He also had no memory of the accident.
Reports are that Sackichan was speeding when he lost control of the Honda Fit car and slammed into the parked car.
His car ended up flying into a yard, breaking a mango tree and then flipping over. It ended up braced on the garage of an old house. Occupants of the house had only relocated to another area a few days ago.
A resident said he heard the loud impact and ran out to investigate. He said Sackichan and Kissoon were flung out of the car and were both covered in blood.
Sackichan was unconscious while Kissoon tried to get up and walk but could not make it to go very far. They were rushed first to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and then transferred to the GPH.
The car belonged to Sackichan’s sister, Melissa who had parked it on the street in front of the house.
Around 8 pm she told her father, Rampersaud ‘Papso’ Sackichan to “bring in the car” and it was then that they discovered that it was gone.
She immediately called her brother’s cell phone and he told her he had taken it and was “coming” but he never did. She kept dialing his phone but he had apparently turned it off.
Afraid that something may have gone wrong she and her father set out to look for him. They then discovered the wrecked vehicles and their worst fears were confirmed. His mother, Lekraji ‘Pam’ Mongal, 49, told Stabroek News that she had retired to bed early and had no idea of what was taking place.
She said she was only aware of the accident around 1.30 am yesterday when doctors told family members that he was “brain dead” and they decided to call her.
In tears, she described him as a good person who had dreams of getting married and having his own place.
