Dear Editor,
Guyana needs to join the Trinidad and Tobago bandwagon and categorise soca music for its 2015 Carib Soca Monarch Competition (Mashramani). There should be a power soca category and a groovy soca category. This would not restrict any artiste from entering both categories.
Failure to do this will mean that once again Guyana will have a messed up decision from the judges as it did in 2014. As I remember, Jumo sang a power soca tune and Kwesi sang a groovy soca tune. Kwesi was declared the winner, but I never endorsed this decision by the judges.
I am not certain whether most Guyanese are aware of the difference between power and groovy soca tunes. I hope they do research and understand the difference. Enough time is available.
The press report stated that Kwesi is coming with something different for the 2015 competition, and if it is that he is belting out a power soca tune and Jumo also goes for power soca, I would endorse the judges’ decision. Quite frankly, I can’t think of anyone else at the moment who can seriously challenge Jumo when it comes power soca, but perhaps Kwesi might be the one to change everything from a power soca level.
Yours faithfully,
T Pemberton
