Following days of rainfall, residents of Port Kaituma are expressing disgust at a deplorable road in the area that they deem a great inconvenience.
The road, linking Port Kaituma and Oronoque, has been a trial for the residents for some time. However, the situation worsened last week when torrential rain hit the area and left huge, muddy puddles in its wake.
Richard Alleyne, former Member of Parliament, told Stabroek News yesterday that the situation was “saddening”.
“I am hurt about what is happening,” Alleyne said. The man explained that contracts were awarded in September for the road’s repair at the cost of about $4 million. However, no work had been done until recently when the rainfall began; then, he said, workers began throwing a mixture of loam and stone in the large potholes.
“They wait until it start raining to throw stuff,” Alleyne pointing out. He went on, “They wait all the time when it was dry, not to do any work… If you’re going to do work you’re supposed to drain out the water first and then put the stuff. You can’t put stuff on water. That’s a waste of resources and you don’t have to be an engineer to know that; basic common sense will tell you that.”
According to Alleyne, residents have been complaining about the terrible condition of the road and the situation is a particularly difficult one for schoolchildren who have to traverse the road on their way to and from school.
