Rotary Club of Stabroek honours two

The Rotary Club of Stabroek has honoured two persons, Sabine McIntosh and Lenox Shuffler in recognition of their stellar contributions.

According to a Rotary Club of Stabroek press release, McIntosh served with the Ministry of Health for a number of years, lectured German at the University of Guyana (UG) and started the ‘Play and Learn’ establishment which produced wooden toys for play groups and nursery schools. As a founding member and President of the Deaf Association of Guyana (DAG), McIntosh, has committed to working with the deaf community fulltime especially with youths both in and out of schools.

Although a native of Germany, McIntosh has resided in Guyana since 1970 and has made significant contributions to the vulnerable, particularly the hearing impaired, in strengthening their individual dignity and self-worth, Rotary said.

Shuffler, is known for his work with Buxton Youth Developers, the release said. At their most vulnerable time, 2005, the youths of Buxton received help in the person of Shuffler. He taught the youths pride in self and community, respect for others and cultural tolerance. According to the release, more than 1500 youths benefitted and are able to hold their own in the world – “to stand up and be counted.”

Shuffler began his career in the insurance field but transferred into distribution and is known as a friend, confidante and helper to many. He has also made significant contributions to the development of Volleyball in Guyana, the release said, and in extending his services to the youths in Buxton has exemplified service above and beyond self.

The plaques were presented by President of the club George Vaughn, who congratulated both recipients on finding their calling and making a difference in the lives of youths who live in a challenging environment.
