Students from Berbice High School recently donated a total of $55,000 to the Guyana Cancer Society’s Berbice chapter and to a cancer patient.
At a simple ceremony, lead fundraisers Priya Arjune and Shameeza Samwaru presented $20,000 to the society and $35,000 to the cancer patient. This is the second year that the fifth form students have raised and donated funds towards the fight against cancer.
During breast cancer awareness month Arjune said they raised $25,000 from students in the school. She also said that her family donated $30,000 towards the cause. According to Arjune, she was inspired to undertake this project by her grandmother who is a cancer survivor. The teen said she remembers that during her grandmother’s battle with the disease that the treatments were expensive. Samwaru was then motivated to join her efforts to raise funds for needy patients who are battling the disease.
Meanwhile, Dr Mujahid Ghazi of the Cancer Institute of Guyana said the students’ efforts have motivated him to work harder to assist cancer patients in Guyana. He advised the persons gathered at the ceremony to undergo clinical examinations by trained health professional every three years.
At the close of the ceremony, a candle was lit and a moment of silence was observed in remembrance of the millions of persons who have lost their battle to cancer.
