A man was sentenced to three months in prison yesterday after he was found guilty of punching his wife in the eye when she told him she was moving out of their home.
The allegation against Safraz Ganni is that on November 23, he assaulted Paulette Simon, a social worker, in their home at 499, ‘A’ Field, South Sophia. The man was also charged with threatening behaviour. He pleaded not guilty to the charges when he was arraigned at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court.
When Magistrate Alex Moore asked Simon about the incident, she said her husband was very jealous and that’s what causes him to be violent.
The woman went on to say that this was not the first occurrence. She related another incident to the court in which, she said her husband cut her with a bottle. But Ganni interjected saying, “No sir, thas na true, a man de push me overboard and rob she of she BlackBerry.”
The man told the court that he feared for his life because his wife had told him that she would poison him. He said, “She’s cruel, because I very sick and she cannot even bring my medication.”
His wife told the court his jealousy was getting overwhelming and she was at her wits’ end because according to her husband, she’s “sleeping with the whole world. This man is so jealous he even threatened to burn the house.”
After listening to the couple, the magistrate told Ganni he was at court’s mercy and his wife’s leniency. He then sentenced the man to three months in prison and ordered him to stay away from Simon when he comes out.
The man said he would comply with the magistrate’s orders and asked if his wife can bring his towel, soap, underwear and his medication.
