A labourer was yesterday placed on $40,000 bail after he admitted that he bought allegedly stolen items from someone but had no idea they were stolen before he made the purchase.
The charge against Bobby Mohamed, 54, of Queenstown, Georgetown, is that on November 24 at Georgetown he stole one jump-start system with compressor and one android tablet, amounting to a total value of $138,000 belonging to Richard Ramoutar.
Mohamed pleaded guilty to the simple larceny charge read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He explained to the court that he bought the items from someone but didn’t know they were stolen. Mohamed said he was offered the items at a price of $5,000 but after he indicated that he did not have all that money the prices were lowered to $2,000. He added that the person he bought the items from is suspected to be from somewhere around the Bourda Market area.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones had no objection to bail but asked for it to be granted in a substantial sum; it was then set at $40,000.
