Prisoners might participate in flex night

This year’s edition of Flex Night International could possibly see prison inmates competing for cash prizes and trophies.

According to a press release from the entity, for the first time in the history of bodybuilding in Guyana, prison inmates will possibly be competing with athletes from other gyms nationally and internationally at the Flex Night International event which will be held on Sunday December 7 at the National Cultural Centre.

The release went on to state that this development takes to another level the unfolding three-way relationship that involves Flex Night Incorporated, Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd. and the Guyana Prison Service.

The Georgetown Prison now boasts a gym facility – Republicans Flex-In Gym – the result of financial support from Demerara Mutual Life Assurance Society Ltd, and technical assistance from Directors of Flex Night Inc. This initiative itself grew out of a paradigm shift announced by the Minister of Home Affairs in 2012 whereby the emphasis would fall more upon correction and rehabilitation than upon punishment. With financial input from Demerara Mutual, an MOU was signed, equipment was acquired and both inmates and officers were trained in the essentials of gym management and basic training techniques.

The entire sporting establishment will, on December 7, be applauding this breakthrough on the part of Flex Night Inc. and the Guyana Prison Service in attracting those representatives to the bodybuilding stage. The event starts at 18:00hrs sharp.

On that highly anticipated night, musclemen and women from Guyana as well as neighbouring and regional bodybuilders will compete for cash prizes, trophies and supplement hampers in four categories.

This year’s edition will feature for the first time the Men’s Physique segment along with the customary, Mr. Flex Night, Ms. Bikini and Ms. Best Legs categories. According to Sinclair, so far 41 athletes (nine females) have registered for the show.
