Social activist Mark Benschop in a statement today said that he and and Mark Jacobs visited the relatives of the fisherman, Asif Rahim Khatoon, who was allegedly beaten by police ranks at the Leonora Police Station. Khatoon, died from his injuries yesterday at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Photo shows Benschop with the wife, mother in law and children of the dead fisherman.
Benschop said he then met with the Divisional Commander to register disgust at the allegations made against his ranks, and called for an independent probe. During the brief meeting, the Commander revealed that ‘two ranks are currently under close arrest.’ Benschop said that a protest is set for 2pm tomorrow (Saturday) in front of the Leonora Police Station.
