The Ministry of Agriculture was yesterday monitoring a weather pattern that was expected to bring significant amounts of rain overnight and into this morning for various coastal communities if it stayed on course.
In a statement, Minister of Agriculture Dr Leslie Ramsammy said that while the weather may improve this afternoon, some communities could still have rain. He said he hoped that the weather event moves away from Guyana’s coast, “but the movement seems to indicate a major weather event for Guyana.”
The Hydrometeorological Department of the Ministry of Agriculture has come under fire in recent years for failing to provide advance warning of severe weather systems, the most recent being last week. Critics have said that its expensive Doppler radar system, funded by the European Union, should give several hours warning of approaching bad weather.
