The Sago Palm

Cycas revoluta commonly called Sago Palm originated from Japan in the Far East. This is not a true palm; actually it belongs to the Cycad family which has approximately 40 species. Cycads are more related to Conifer and Ginko trees. Cycas revoluta are unusual and popular ornamental trees. with rugged trunks and feathery fronds (leaves), hence the common name.

Cycas revoluta are extremely long lived and older specimens can grow into multi-trunks with multiple fronds. The new fronds emerge all at once in a circular pattern and are very tender until they begin to harden off. You can then see the new glossy, deep green fronds.

Plant Cycas in well-drained rich potting soil slightly above the soil line. They should be outdoors in full sun. Water lightly. Remember Cycas likes to be more on the dry side like a succulent than a palm.

It is excellent both as a potted plant as well as in the ground. Fertilize with Osmocote Slow Release Fertilizer once every two months.

Cycas has adapted well to Guyana. A 220 year-old specimen is on display at the Royal Botanical Gardens, Kew, England in the Tropical Hot House. It is a must to see when you visit Kew.

NB: With the heavy rainfall, please remember to lift your plants to higher ground or else they will become waterlogged. They will also need some plant food to help them along the way. Your lawn would also need to be spiked.

Until next week, happy gardening!
