Island All-Stars kept their chances alive of progressing to the knockout stages, overcoming North Sophia 2-1 when the final group round in the Guinness Greatest of the Streets Georgetown leg got underway yesterday at the Demerara Park Tarmac.
North Sophia got off to the perfect start in the matchup as Andrew Smart gave them the early lead in the eighth minute, lashing his first-time effort down the centre of the goal, after collecting a left-sided pass on the right side of the field.
However, Island All-Stars would level the score line seven minutes later compliments of an Orson McCurdy right-sided attempt to the middle of the net, to spark wild celebrations from the large gathering.
The go-ahead winner would then be realized in the 17th minute as Devon Hyman etched his name on the scorer’s sheet, placing his shot to the right-hand corner of the goal, after receiving a right-sided pass from Alpha McPhoy following a two-on-one situation with the final defender.
With the win, Island All-Stars finish their campaign with six points and a goal difference of 0 from three matches. They will now await the Festival City Warriors and East Front Road matchup to know their fate.
Festival City Warriors currently sit atop group-C with six points and a goal difference of +4 while East Front Road lie in the third spot with three points and a goal differential of -1. Meanwhile North Sophia finished their campaign with zero points and a goal difference of -2 from three matches.
In the second matchup of the night, Tucville ended their campaign on a positive note, defeating group-H winners West Back Road 3-2 on sudden death kicks after normal time concluded with the scores locked at 1-1.
Kareem Knights gave the eventual winners the early lead in the sixth minute with a finish down the centre of the goal after receiving a pass on the right side of the field.
West Back Road would push the matchup into penalty kicks as Akeem Fitzpatrick found the back of the net in the 16th minute, stabbing his effort down the centre of the goal, after pouncing on a defensive error between the Tucville defenders. Up to press time the remaining six fixtures were being contested.
