An employee of Munesh-wers Limited is now a remanded prisoner after he was charged with stealing high priced liquor from a city supermarket on two separate occasions.
Lakeram Doodnauth, 56, pleaded not guilty to two charges of simple larceny when they were read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts yesterday.
It is alleged that on November 20, at Sheriff Street, Campbellville, Doodnauth stole a bottle of Ciroc, valued $13,224, from Distribution Services Limited (DSL).
It is also alleged that on November 25, he also stole a bottle Grey Goose vodka and a bottle Absolut vodka, amounting to a total value of $20,182, from DSL.
Prosecutor Michael Grant objected to bail based on the fact that Doodnauth allegedly committed the offence twice. Grant said Doodnauth went to the DSL on two occasions; the first time he stole and went back to work, while on the second occasion he was caught committing the crime by a surveillance camera. Grant added that if bail is granted to Doodnauth, there was a likelihood that he might want to go back again and commit the offence.
Doodnauth told the court, “I would like to pay back for the items, My Worship,” but he was remanded to prison.
He is to make his next court appearance on December 5 before Magistrate Geeta Chandan-Edmond.
