Guyana’s Jason Yaw snared gold in the 400m final of the 22nd edition of the South American Youth Championships at the Estadio Pascual Guerrero in Cali, Colombia on Saturday en route to erasing the meet record.
Yaw who took the 400m gold in 46.79, a national youth best and meet record inked his name in the record books along with 12 other performers.
Aided by the 950m of altitude of the capital of the Valle Department, Cali’s track delivered 13 meeting records, including two in events held for the first time, such as the decathlon and the mixed relay.
Yaw’s Running Brave Athletic Club mate, Natricia Hooper was also on the podium. She placed second in the 400m girls final to earn the silver.
She was also billed to compete in the triple jump event. Results for that will be carried in a subsequent article.
Those who shone at the event have qualified for the 2015 IAAF World Youth Championships.
Once again Brazil dominated the medals table with 13 gold, 12 silver and 10 bronzes, followed by Colombia with (7, 8, 6) and Ecuador (7, 6, 3).
