Guyana Jaguars Captain Vishaul Singh said that he knows his team will rebound from the stunning loss against Barbados yesterday and is confident that the players will quickly regroup for their fourth round match against Trinidad & Tobago.
Following Barbados’ come-from-behind 2-run win yesterday, Stabroek Sports caught up with the local team captain who was still in a positive mindset despite the hapless loss. “I think with chasing a low total complacency stepped in … but I also give credit to Barbados on their win.”
Singh explained that despite the carelessness exhibited by the entire batting unit, he was certain that the guys would put this loss behind them and focus on the upcoming match against the Trinidad Red Force which begins later this week. He stated that the approach when chasing the 69- run target was to simply bat as they were before and not to try anything different.
Guyana, who maintained control of the match for the first three days were then subject to a sound lesson on never giving up when a 94-run partnership between Ryan Hinds (68) and Shane Dowrich (50) along with Dwayne Smith’s 5-17 snatched victory from the Jaguars.
When asked whether a message was sent out to the tail-enders at the point when the result of the game depended on their approach, Singh admitted that he did not send any messages to the middle as he opted to allow the likes of Devendra Bishoo and Ronsford Beaton to play their natural game. “At that point in time when the tail-enders were batting we let them play their natural game because we didn’t want to send messages to confuse them in any way”.
Singh, who replaced Leon Johnson as skipper said the absence of Johnson, Assad Fudadin and Shivnarine Chanderpaul who are currently preparing to engage the South Africans in the upcoming Test series was a big blow to the team but also a chance for other players to step up. “Having lost three Test players will soften any team but it’s a chance for the new players to come in and shine and I’m sure the guys will do so”, said the Captain.
The 25-year-old also said that as skipper he will not be deterred by the loss and he is keen on playing a bigger part in the team’s success for the upcoming matches.
“My role wouldn’t change, I’ll still lead the team, We had a bad one or two hours in the match but my role going forward is to inspire the guys, we’re still on top of the table so we need to move forward for the next match”.
