A taxi driver, accused of punching his common-law wife and threatening to throw her through a window, was released on bail and placed on a bond to keep the peace after being arraigned in a city court yesterday.
The charge against Patrick David, 45, of 79, Princes Street, Lodge, is that on November 30 he assaulted Shamenn Smith at their home.
David allegedly dealt several punches to Smith, which she reported, resulting in his arrest.
The unrepresented man pleaded not guilty to the charge, which was read to him by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Smith is fearful of the man, who is in the habit of abusing her and has threatened to throw her through a window. While also noting that the couple share a residence, Jones suggested that David might tamper with the witness if released and he objected to bail
The prosecution’s objection was, however, overruled by the court and David was released on $10,000 bail and was placed on a bond to keep the peace until the completion of his trial. Smith, meanwhile, was advised to seek a protection order under the Domestic Violence Act.
The matter was adjourned until December 10th, when it will be called at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court 10.
