Esuan Crandon, the Guyana Jaguars Head Coach blames irresponsible batting for the nightmare two-run loss his team suffered at the hands of the Barbados Pride on Monday in round three of the WICB Regional four-day match at the Guyana National Stadium.
“We beat ourselves after having been on top of the game for three days. We had one poor session which caused us the match. The guys gave their wickets away it was poor if you can’t get 69 it has to be poor batting”, lamented Crandon, who spoke with Stabroek Sports on Monday following one of the worst batting displays by Guyana in years.
The local side controlled the tides of the match for the first three days and even wrapped up an efficient bowling performance which ended with them requiring a mere 69 runs to win from an entire day of cricket.
The Guyana coach further said that he thought the tactics for the last day were positive but complicated as well. “I think in our approach we wanted the guys to be positive, but chasing these low runs on a fourth day wicket is tricky. I think (Rajendra) Chandrika (who top scored with 30) played a good innings”. Crandon also identified the 94-run partnership between the Barbados duo Ryan Hinds (68) and Shane Dowrich (50) which they allowed to blossom as an area they should have “squeezed and cut back on”.
He continued, “Everyone is disappointed in the way we lost the game, we just didn’t click with our batting, however we are asking them to step up their game, the team is still on top of the table and we will be looking to get points against Trinidad before we switch to the 50-over format”.
Crandon added “We want to continue the good work we have been doing so far. When you are winning you wouldn’t get criticism so we as a team need to regroup and work harder on capitalizing on the crucial moments”.
