A Johanna rice farmer was robbed on Monday night of more than 2 million dollars in cash and jewellery by four armed bandits.
Jainarine Singh called ‘Hardat’ of 38 Johanna North, Black Bush Polder, told Stabroek News he was at home with his wife Drupattie Singh called Geeta, 42 and their two children when they were attacked.
Singh recalled that around 20:30 hrs on Monday night, he was lying in the hammock waiting for his wife when the four men pounced on him. Two of them were armed with guns and other two had cutlasses.
He explained, at the same time his wife was walking towards him, she observed what was occurring and locked the door. The men then told Singh to instruct his wife to open the door to the bottom flat of the house, which she did and they entered.
After gaining access to the bottom flat, Singh said, they placed him to lie on the floor and demanded the cash and jewellery. He then instructed his wife to give them the valuables. She handed over $500,000 in cash and approximately $2M in jewellery, which according to Singh was cash he had in his home to pay workers and purchase additional goods for wholesale purposes.
Singh, who is also a cash crop wholesale vendor, said the ordeal lasted for fifteen minutes. After the incident, the men escaped and police was summoned. Although they responded immediately, no one was captured.
Singh told Stabroek News this was the first time he was robbed of this quantity of valuables. He said a few years ago he was robbed of gardening equipment but was able to recover the items since it was a person from the neighbourhood who stole them.
He also indicated he does not have any idea who the suspects were, but they all wore masks, one was tall and three were medium built.
Investigations are ongoing.
