Two men accused of robbing another man of his motor vehicle at gun-point were yesterday both remanded to prison after being arraigned at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
The allegation against Andrew Pollydore and Dion Alleyne is that on November 27 at Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara; being armed with a gun, they robbed Rabindranauth Sookra of his Toyota Premio valued $3.3 million.
The jointly-charged duo was not required to plead to the indictable charge when it was read to them by Magistrate Ann McLennan.
No facts other than those stated in the charge were presented to the court.
Pollydore, 27, and Alleyne, 28, were both represented by attorney George Thomas who applied unsuccessfully for his clients to be granted their pretrial liberty.
Thomas said that the men are gainfully employed; Pollydore as a miner, and Alleyne as a security guard. He said they have fixed places of abode in apartments at Lot 3267 Lamaha Park, stating that they pose no risk of flight.
Counsel added too that his clients have no previous or pending matters and have been cooperating with the police.
He told the court that Pollydore had been kept in custody in excess of 72 hours.
According to the lawyer, his clients were placed on several identification parades but were not picked out by the complainant.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones however objected to bail citing the nature, gravity and penalty the offence attracts if guilt is found.
He said that the address given to the police was 3207 Lamaha Park and not 3267.
The prosecution in its objections to bail advanced that violence was used on the complainant and that CCTV cameras located at Sookra’s home had captured the defendants.
Magistrate McLennan informed the men that they would be denied bail. Their matter was transferred to the Vreed-en-Hoop Magistrate’s Court for December 8.Alleyne was
further charged with having 2 grammes of cannabis in his possession on November 30 which he denied, emphasising strongly, “I know nothing about that.”
Jones had no objections to counsel’s bail application but requested it be set in a substantial sum which was subsequently granted to the tune of $50,000.
His matter will be called again on January 8 at Court Five. Pollydore is the father of one minor child while Alleyne is the father of three minors.
