An injustice has been done to Kandasammy and Foo

Dear Editor,

With regard to the composition of the Guyana team that is participating in the ongoing West Indies professional Cricket League, after outstanding performances in the first two matches of the competition things seems to be falling apart. Blame should be laid squarely at the feet of the selectors.

How on earth did the selectors come up with idea of making Vishal Singh the captain when the man cannot even command a permanent place in the team. Permaul should have been appointed captain with Deonarine his deputy. That’s the first blunder of the selectors. Secondly,Trevon Griffith and Tagenarine Chanderpaul failed miserably in the inter-county and trial matches yet they were selected ahead of Kandasammy Surujnarine and Jonathon Foo, who were outstanding in both the inter-county and trial matches. Is it because Griffith is a favourite of the selectors and Tagenarine is the son of the great Shivnarine Chanderpaul? Whatever the reasons, a great disservice has been done to Kandasammy and Foo. Kanda scored one of the best centuries seen for a long time against Demerara which was described by cricket commentators and analysts as being of the highest class, and Foo has been very consistent in all forms of cricket for the entire year. A grave injustice has been done to these two young men. Here is hoping that all of them will do the honourable thing and right this wrong.

Finally, let me take this opportunity to wish Shiv Johnson and Fudadin great success in South Africa, and hope they keep the Golden Arrowhead flying high paving the way for Narsingh, Permaul and Bishoo to walk into the West Indies team very soon. Wouldn’t it be great to have six Guyanese in the woeful West Indies team? By the way, it is time the West Indies selectors ended the careers of Gayle, Dwayne Bravo, Pollard and Sammy, and let them continue to seek their fortunes in the many 20/20cricket franchises around the world. It is clear they do not have West Indies cricket at heart; all they are concerned about is the money. As one cricket analyst said, they are cricket mercenaries. Getting rid of them will do West Indies cricket a world of good.

Yours faithfully,
Imtiaz Baccus
