Three victories today separate the national men’s 7s rugby team from adding a seventh NACRA 7s trophy to their silverware cabinet after winning all three of their Group C matches yesterday in Mexico City.
With the triumphs on the first day of the two-day championship, the ‘Green Machine’ clinched a quarterfinals berth with a maximum nine points and will look to continue their winning ways at the Mars Field when action kicks off from 10:44hrs.
In their first game, the national ruggers playing at a true championship level started proceedings by defeating the hosts and title holders 19-7, then returned to hammer the Cayman Islands, 36-12.
The men in green then blanked the whipping boys of the group, St. Vincent 47-nil.
Speedy winger, Patrick King recorded several tries and was instrumental in Guyana’s success yesterday.
Pool C Summary for yesterday:
Mexico lost 19-7 to Guyana then thrashed St. Vincent 68-nil. St. Vincent then went down to the Cayman Islands 56-14, then to Guyana 47-0
In the final game featuring the Cayman Islands and Mexico, the hosts shut out the visitors, 35-0.
Trinidad, Jamaica, Curacao, Mexico B, Barbados, Bermuda, BVI and St Lucia are the other teams vying for the championship during the annual fixture.
Once team Guyana is victorious in this tournament, it paves the way for them to compete at the Hong Kong 7s in three months free of cost which will then serve as the perfect warm up for the NACRA Championships three months later, a qualifier for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil.
Winning also ensures that the six time champions (2006-2011) qualifies for the Pan Am Rugby Championships slated for Canada next July.
The stakes will be as high as the altitude in Mexico. (Emmerson Campbell)
