In an effort to reduce the rising crime rate in Berbice, police have launched a crime prevention strategy that intends to pool the efforts of persons from youth groups, religious organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to stem illegal activities.
The ‘B’ Division blueprint entails fostering collaborations among these groups through extracurricular activities, such as sports and other interactive sessions. Assistant Commissioner of Police Brian Joseph said every citizen has a role to play in curbing crime and he believes that this initiative will play an integral role in helping residents to create healthier and safer communities.
Additionally, Assistant Superintendent Terrence Browne, Officer-in-Charge of No.2 Sub-Division, said the initiative stemmed from a meeting police held with stakeholders to exchange ideas about reducing crime.
They overcame financial constraints with fundraising, which garnered $361,000, which was used to purchase sport gears, educational and recreational games.
Nursery, primary and secondary schools, youth clubs and a scout group benefited from the items presented at the launching. Many organisations have pledged to support the police in the fight against crime.
