Hemwattie Amyan dethroned her younger sister and former national champion Rosetta Hiralall to become the new Women’s 501 Darts Champion at the National Darts Championship which ended on Sunday at the Malteenoes Sports Club (MSC) Pavilion.
Amyan triumphed 4-0 in the best of seven games over Hiralall, who recently became the first Guyanese woman to win an international darts tourney after winning the Brydens Barbados Classic.
In the Men’s category, defending Men’s Singles Champion Sudesh Fitzgerald fortified his title with a stunning performance that saw him emerge as victor over Anil Latchman. In the best of nine games, Fitzgerald recovered from being down two games to nil to claim championship honours at 5-2.
In the other games played over the two days, starting Saturday; the results are as follows, Team Event 3rd Place Playoff – the All Stars got past Bank of Guyana 3-1. Sherwyn Greene/Rosetta Hiralall/Lalchand Rambharose won the Mixed Triples 701 over Miguel Ramirez-Merlano/Mary Correia/Delon Correia three games to one. In the third place play-off, Sudesh Fitzgerald/Veronica Seepersaud/Guy Wharton defeated Nicholas Seetaram/Jean DeSouza/Mark Persaud 2-0.
Men’s Doubles 501 was awarded to Nicholas Seetaram/Sudesh Fitzgerald following the disqualification of the other finalists Anil Lachman/Colin France when France breached the Rules of Tournament. Andrew Balchand/Chris Fulton, who originally finished in third place after defeating Ravi Budhu/Guy Wharton, were elevated to second place and the third place went to Budhu/Wharton.
Women’s Doubles 501 was won by the defending champions Hiralall/Amyan over Melissa Smartt/Natisha Fordyce 3-0. The third position went to Jean DeSouza/Mary Correia.
In the Mixed Doubles 501 finals, Lalchand Rambharose/Hiralall conquered Miguel Ramirez-Merlano/Mary Correia 3-1. The original third place finishers Colin France/Shondell Hyles were disqualified when France breached the Rules of Tournament. As a result that position was awarded to Melissa Smartt/Adrian Damon.
A number of incentive prizes were awarded to Anil Lachman for the highest check-out (the number of points to finish off a game) – 139, Lalchand Rambharose for the shortest game – 14 darts. Rambharose for being the only player to register a maximum throw (180 points). Fitzgerald for scoring 75 hundreds, a new record, bettering the 66 he set last year. Rosetta Hiralall for scoring the most 100s by a woman – 21.
Grantley Culbard, president of the Guyana Darts Association extended gratitude to LENS for sponsoring the Championship. He recalled the days when the late managing director of LENS, Len Rambharose, was president of the GDA.
It was also announced that Colin France would have to face the disciplinary committee of the GDA to answer several charges of alleged misconduct.
