A former soldier, who usually stages a one-man protest outside the Office of the Attorney General (AG), was yesterday invited to the Brickdam Police Station where he was questioned about illegal entry and threatening staff at the office.
According to Courtney Crum-Ewing, 40, after hearing the leaked conversation between AG Anil Nandlall and senior reporter of Kaieteur News Leonard Gildarie, he became upset and shocked over the AG’s remarks about a female reporter.
“I was very much upset with the AG for making such remarks. I have three daughters and that’s why I am out there everyday protesting,” he said. Crum-Ewing said he had written a letter to the AG informing him that if he doesn’t resign, he will take immediate action by staging a protest outside his chambers on Carmichael Street.
According to Crum-Ewing, after protesting for a while on Thursday, he had passed the security hut after glancing in and indicating that he was going to the washroom. He then proceeded to receptionist’s desk and inquired if he could use the bathroom, the staff agreed.
He said that after he had finished, the guard approached him and inquired why he was in the compound.
“I told her that I wanted to use the bathroom and I got permission to do so,” he said.
When asked by Stabroek News why he didn’t wait for the guard’s approval for admittance before walking in, he replied, “It is a public compound, I needed no permission to enter.”
Crum-Ewing said when he returned yesterday to protest, he was approached by a police officer who invited him to police station.
He agreed and was taken to Brickdam Police Station, where he gave a statement. He also indicated that other statements were given by the reception personnel at the AG’s office.
He said that after he gave his statement, a senior officer told his men to “charge him, charge him.” He said that through an open door he heard another officer say, “If you gon charge this man, you gotta be careful because it ain’t got nun to charge he with.”
Crum-Ewing said he was later informed that he will be placed on self-bail.
“They told me to sign and proceed but I must return on Monday at 9 am, where they said that they will advise me on how they plan to proceed” Crum-Ewing said.
