Old Fort overcame a four-goal deficit to draw 4-4 with the National u-19 setup in their men’s divisional encounter when the Diamond Mineral Water International Indoor Hockey Festival commenced on Thursday at the National Gymnasium.
With the national u-19 setup seemingly cruising to victory with the score locked at 4-0 in the second period, Old Fort would pull one back in the 36th minute as Omar Hopkinson netted through a penalty stroke.
The resulting goal appeared to ignite Old Fort’s struggling offence as defender Aderemi Simon netted once minute later.
It would then become 4-3 in the 38th minute as Jason DeSantos found the back of the net, slotting home upon cutting into the left side of the shooting area after skipping past two defenders.
The dramatic draw would then be realised in the final seconds of the match as DeSantos netted his second, sweeping his effort into the net unchallenged on the left post after receiving a perfectly paced right-sided pass from Simon.
The second matchup of the section saw GCC hammering Renegades 12-2 compliments of helmet tricks from Orland Semple and Kevin Spender. Completing the score line with doubles were Stephen Xavier and Rafael deGroot.
Dwight McCalman and Peter Jones were on target in a losing cause. Also making an impressive start to the tournament was Hikers who crushed Saints by a 6-2 score line in the final men’s divisional fixture.
On the distaff side, GCC mauled Hikers by a 7-1 margin. Kerensa Fernandes and Sonia Jardine led the assault with doubles while Ashley deGroot, Shebiki Baptiste and Lanica Persaud found the back of the net with solo strikes. On target in the loss was Maria Munroe.
