Upset victories highlighted the opening day of the Vitamalt/Aqua Mist-sponsored West Demerara Football Association (WDFA) Knockout Cup as Beavers FC and Wales FC recorded qualification victories yesterday at the Den Amstel ground.
Former Guyana Football Federation (GFF) outfit Young Achievers were embarrassed by Beavers FC by a 4-0 score line in the feature contest while lowest ranked WDFA side, Wales FC squeaked past Bagotville/Nismes by a 1-0 margin.
With the respective wins, Beavers FC and Wales FC qualified for the quarterfinal section of the tourney.
In the feature matchup between Beavers and Young Achievers, the former would take the lead in the 39th minute as an initial left-sided attempt from outside the penalty area, took a sharp deflection off the leg of the defender and settled into the right-hand corner of the net.
It would become 2-0 in the 53rd minute as Martin Bobb netted through a penalty kick conversion, finishing his right-footed effort into the lower left-hand corner of the goal, following a clumsy challenge inside the box.
Maxwell Trapp would further increase the score line in the 72nd minute, stabbing his effort down the centre of the goal from just outside the centre of the right upright, after the ball fell fortuitously into his path unchallenged.
The win would then be sealed in the 86th minute as Andrew St. Hill found the back of the net, curling his right-footed free kick 21 yards out from the centre of the penalty area into the lower right-hand corner of the net.
In the opening matchup, Wales FC emerged victorious in a cagey affair compliments of Keton Boyce’s sublime header in the 32nd minute.
Lurking just outside the left upright, the lanky Boyce would climb above everyone to direct his powerful attempt from a right-sided cornerkick into the top right-hand corner, leaving the opposing custodian rooted to the spot and the large gathering on their feet.
Prior to the commencement of the tourney, a march past featuring the participating teams was held. The action is slated to continue at the same venue on Friday December 12th with a doubleheader.
In the opening matchup at 18:00hrs, Pouderoyen FC will face off with Stewartville FC while Beavers FC and Slingerz FC will lock horns in the feature contest at 20:00hrs.
Tourney winners will receive the championship trophy and $1,000,000 while the second place side will pocket the runners-up trophy and $500,000.
The third place finishers will receive $300,000 and the respective accolade whilst the fourth placed unit will walk away with $200,000 and a trophy.
