A tattoo artist, accused in the theft of $1 million in valves, was remanded to prison yesterday after a court heard that he was caught selling the stolen items.
It was alleged that Brenton Charles stole the items, valued in total at $1,112,718, from Bharrat Singh on December 5, at Montrose, East Coast Demerara.
When Magistrate Zameena Ali read the charge at the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Court, Charles pleaded not guilty.
According to Prosecutor John Singh, the theft was reported to the police, who, acting on information received, were able to track down the accused while he was in the process of selling the items.
In her application for bail, Charles’ lawyer, Gwendolyn Bristol, said her client was not convicted before. She also cited the fact that he was in a long-term relationship in order to support the contention that he was not a flight risk.
However, Prosecutor Singh objected to bail because the man was caught selling the articles.
As a result, the magistrate remanded Charles to prison until January 7.
