A Kamarang man was yesterday remanded to prison after he was charged with unlawful possession of a shotgun and ammunition.
Nash Grennis, 36, pleaded not guilty to the charge which stated that on December 4, at Kamarang, he had in his possession a 16-gauge single-barrelled shotgun and a round of ammunition without being a licensed firearm holder. He pleaded not guilty to both charges.
His attorney, David James, told the court that the firearm was found in some bushes and not on the person of Grennis. He added that Grennis never admitted to being in possession of the weapon.
In regards to the ammunition, he stated that it was found in a cabinet of a house, which was in a general area to which many other people had access. He added that Grennis was visiting the area at the time and was only there two days before his arrest.
James further pleaded with the magistrate to be lenient in considering bail for his client, while noting that Grennis has ties to his community and does not pose a flight risk.
Prosecutor Deniro Jones, however, objected to the defendant being granted bail given the penalty the offence carries and he also mentioned that Grennis has a pending matter in court. Magistrate Ann McLennan, after considering the submissions, refused to grant bail and the case was transferred to the Kamarang Magistrate’s Court, where it will be called on December 15.
