“My worship is first time I do something like this, please give me a chance,” were the words of Wazim Khan on Monday before Magistrate Ann McLennan sentenced him for stealing almost $2 million in valuables during a break and enter and larceny.
Khan, a labourer, of Hill Foot, Soesdyke Highway, East Bank Demerara, pleaded guilty to the charge that was read to him at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts. The court heard that on December 3, at Eccles, East Bank Demerara, he broke and entered the dwelling house of Aleem Khan and stole a quantity of gold and diamond jewellery along with $20,000. In total, the stolen items amounted to $1,820,000.
According to Prosecutor Deniro Jones, Khan sometimes went to the residence to do domestic work when needed.
Jones added on the day in question, Khan went to the home to do some work and he was given some food to eat and left alone. The complainant secured his home then left and returned later to find some window louvres missing from his house along with the valuables. He subsequently made a report to the police, who found the accused’s prints at the crime scene. Khan admitted to the police in a caution statement that he committed the offence and then took them to the various places where he sold the stolen items. Some of the items were recovered. After taking into consideration that Khan didn’t waste the court’s time, the magistrate sentenced him to 50 months imprisonment.
