Though it did not possess the atmosphere of their previous encounter in the GFA/Banks Beer Cup 2012 finale, Riddim Squad exacted revenge on Sunburst Camptown, overcoming the latter 2-1 in their group fixture on Monday at the Camp Ayanganna ground.
Sceyon Hope and Amos Ramsay were on target in the win for the Mocha-based outfit in the 80th and 82nd minutes respectively while Reshawn Sandiford gave the losers the initial lead in the 68th minute.
In an opening period devoid of goal-scoring chances, Riddim Squad should have taken the lead in the 35th minute as Sheldon Hope was denied by the outstretched legs of the opposing custodian in a one-on-one situation within the left side of the area.
Unable to fashion any meaningful attack, Sunburst Camptown would be given a golden opportunity to take the lead in the form of a penalty kick as Lance Rolston was clumsily brought down inside the left half of the area.
Tasked with taking the resulting spot-kick, captain Sandiford would ensure that the Campbellville giants capitalised on their recent good fortune, slotting his flat right-footed attempt down the centre of the goal.
Lady Luck would continue to smile on Sunburst Camptown as a 26-yard Dellon John free kick from the left side of the field two minutes later, came crashing off the crossbar with the Campbellville custodian well beaten.
However their good fortune would eventually come to an end, following the awarding of a penalty kick in the 80th minute as Troy Prescod was deemed to have handled the ball within the right side of the box, in an attempt to clear a right-sided corner kick.
Given the responsibility of taking the dead-ball opportunity, Hope would clinically dispatch his right-footed effort down the centre of the goal to restore parity to the proceedings.
Ramsay would then make his presence felt two minutes onward to steal the come-from-behind win, turning and smashing his left-footed effort into the lower right-hand corner from the centre of the penalty box.
Meanwhile in the opening matchup, Santos FC came from behind to defeat Beacons FC by a 3-1 margin. Kimba Brathwaite gave Beacons the early lead as he found the back of the net through a 25th minute conversion.
However their lead would be short-lived as Anthony Abrams levelled proceedings five minutes later. Santos would quickly take the lead for the first time in the fixture compliments of a Gavin Wilson attempt one minute later.
The win would then be sealed in the 70th minute as Wilson netted his second of the night. The action is slated to continue at the same venue with a doubleheader.
In the feature contest, Pele FC will face off with Flamingo FC at 20:30hrs while the opening matchup will pit home side, the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) against Black Pearl FC from 18:30hrs.
