Rookie Richard Haniff continued his impressive season of golf, winning the top prize in the annual year-end Grand Coastal Golf Tournament last Saturday at the Lusignan Golf Course (LGC).
With a handicap of 20, Haniff returned a net score of 63 to be adjudged the clear winner in the day’s play, finishing ahead of a field of more than 40 golfers. He also recorded the day’s best gross of 83 to win another prize.
“I had posted on my Facebook page the five trophies I won during this year at golf, and mentioned that I hoped to add a sixth in the Grand Coastal Tournament, but in fact, I’ve added two today!” Haniff said, after winning. He believes that his ability to focus directly contributed to his win. “I was able to focus on playing each hole on its own merit, and feeling good about my play, not checking on his scores until the last three holes” he said, according to a press release from the LGC.
Patanjalee ‘Pur’ Persaud came in second, Sam Harry, third and Bholawram Deo, fourth while Parmanand ‘Max’ Persaud won the nearest to the pin prize. The 12 and 13-year-old Ramroop brothers Lakshman and Sachin also participated in the tourney.
General Manager of Grand Coastal Kevin Daby, a friend of Haniff was highly complementary of his performance.
Meanwhile, Club President David Mohamad thanked Grand Coastal for their consistent and dependable sponsorship of tournaments. He noted the friendly but keen rivalry among the golfers, after the three-week lay-off from competitive play due to too wet grounds, continues to augur well for the sport in Guyana. He also singled out the Ramroops’ participation for special mention and welcomed the involvement of such youthful players in the game.
