St George’s High and St Stanislaus College registered opening day victories in the Premiership Group Secondary Schools U-17 knockout football tournament yesterday at the Ministry of Education ground on Carifesta Avenue.
The Church Street unit defeated Dolphin Secondary via walkover while the Brickdam-based institution registered a victory by the same outcome against Charlestown Secondary. Due to the wins, St George’s and Saints advance to the quarterfinal.
Following the conclusion of the matches, Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Steve Ninvalle officially opened the tournament with the ceremonial kick-off from the halfway mark. Ninvalle in a brief address to the teams, congratulated the organizers for hosting the tournament and encouraged the students to play the game with a spirit of camaraderie and respect for each other and for the rules of the game. He further said the ministry will continue to support the event going forward as he envisions it becoming bigger and better in the years to come.
Winners of the event will receive prizes equivalent to the value of $200,000 and the championship trophy.
The second, third and fourth place finishers will collect prizes and the corresponding trophy equivalent to the value of $150,000, $100,000 and $75,000 respectively.
