A man who admitted to stealing a vendor’s purse was yesterday sentenced to 18 months imprisonment.
Arshad Ali pleaded guilty to the charge of simple larceny when he appeared at the George-town Magistrates’ Court.
It is alleged that on December 10, at Water Street, Ali, 26, of 182 Mon Repos, East Coast Deme-rara, stole a handbag, including a cellphone and a quantity of cash, from Hazel Limerick, amounting to $35,000 in total value.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Limerick, who is a vendor in the bazaar section of the Stabroek Market, left her handbag in her stand and Ali, who was passing by, snatched it and ran away. However, Jones added that Ali was later caught on Leopold Street and was subsequently taken to the Brickdam Police Station. The phone and handbag were recovered, the court was also told.
“My worship, I pleaded guilty because she tell the police she ain’t lost nothing,” Ali told the court.
“I got my mother dead wuk to do this month, My Worship, and I don’t know what will happen,” he added, as he shook his head.
After listening to him, Magistrate Ann McLennan handed down the 18-month sentence.
